The aim of this project for the construction of the 68 MLD Delhi Gate Nalla Sewage Treatment Plant in New Delhi is to trap the highly polluted waste water flowing in the open drain (Delhi Gate Nalla), treat it to a high level, so that only clean, treated effluent is discharged into the river course, thus contributing towards the abatement of pollution in the river Yamuna.
The plant was to be built in a space with challenging constraints and encumbrances – huge space constraint, odd triangular land geometry, major flyover crossing the site, big open sewage drain at one end, HT Electric line along one side, a railway line along the other side, and above all at a VVIP location – right across the state’s Chief Minister Office.
A Design-build and Operate contract for Delhi Jal Board, this plant is known for its compact footprint - built in less than six acres of land. A plant of similar capacity based on any other technology would have necessitated a use of three times more land to build the same. SUEZ has implemented the efficient process technologies like Densadeg® 3D Clarifier, Biofor® Biofiltration Technology and Deglis® Anaerobic Sludge Digestion Process, in order to cut down on its Operation & Maintenance costs and add to the power availability in the city. This plant is almost a 60% self-sustaining in terms of its power demand which is met by a captive biogas-based power generation system. Thus, running on clean energy, it also reduces air pollution caused due to discharge of Methane in the environment.
This plant is equipped with state-of-the-art Odour Control and Treatment System – a first of its kind in the history of Indian Sewage Treatment Plants.
The commissioning of this plant in 2015 is an important step in reduction of pollution in River Yamuna in New Delhi. This has added to the ongoing efforts by many organisations to clean up the river and protecting the citizens of Delhi from various health hazards.
SUEZ is in charge of its operation and maintenance for the next 11 years.
