A Northern India company, which manufactures chocolate powder and analgesics, required a water treatment solution to reduce its raw water utilization by recycling its treated wastewater effluent and to save regeneration chemical. Furthermore, the Company required a wastewater recovery scheme which could handle variations in feedwater quality such as TDS, TSS and temperature.
Working with the customer’s parameters, SUEZ proposed a conventional RO system for reject recovery. This RO operates at 85% recovery and uses brackish water reverse osmosis (BWRO) membranes. It is a three stage RO system with a booster pump for the third stage. The wastewater recovery system is an electrodialysis reversal (EDR) based treatment system. The total dissolved solids (TDS) rejects per day in the existing system is approx. 235 m³/day with a TDS value of approx. 10,000 ppm. The proposed retrofit raw water plant is designed with a TDS value of 1500 ppm.
Permeate water from the RO systems is collected into a product water tank. From there the water is fed to SUEZ’s EDR system, an advanced water treatment process based on electrical current across membranes. It removes dissolved solids in the form of mineral ions from the wastewater.
Using a polarity reversal design, SUEZ’s EDR Systems are also self-cleaning and durable in turbid wastewater conditions.

With commissioning of this plant the RO and EDR system reduced the chemical use by 10 times and also reduced the salt quantity in the plant. The solution provided by SUEZ reduced the chemical costs of the company by US$200,000 per year.
